Newport News- On May 31st, our beloved family member, Lydia Denise Stewart, answered her Father’s call and joined her family in glory.
Lydia was born in Newport News, VA, where she was a member of the Huntington High School Vikings. She later held positions with various employers, to include Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. and Virginia State School.
Lydia’s soft nature was her strength as she said little but did so much for her family. She was known as a great cook who had a love for singing and taking care of her nieces and nephews. She was also known as “The Straightening Comb Queen” as her aptitude to beautify was second to none. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Lydia is preceded in death by her mother, Vivian I. Christopher; her father, Alvester Stewart; stepfather, Charles T. Christopher; and her grandparents, George and Rosetta Williams.
Lydia is survived by her only child, Tony L. Stewart of Newport News; five sisters, Vanessa Carroll (Joenathan) of Newport News, Kathy Guion (Robert) of Hampton, Gail Ricks (Larry) of Hampton, Marilyn Pryear (Andra) of Newport News, and Tammy Nunes (Randolph) of Newport News; one brother, David W. Stewart of Newport News; three grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.
A homegoing service will be held, 11a.m., Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at Emmanuel Grace Baptist Church, 3301 Kecoughtan Road, Hampton. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and two hours prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
