Audrey Virginia Totten, 84, died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 in Newport News, Virginia. She was born on February 13, 1939 in Grafton, Yorktown, Virginia to the late Horace Edward Evans (father) and Julia Virginia Savage (mother).
On March 15, 1957, Audrey married the man of her dreams, Joseph Edwin Totten, Sr. and settled in Newport News, Virginia where they had seven kids. They celebrated 28 years of marriage until he was called home in December 1985. Audrey loved to read, dance, work crossword puzzles, travel, spend time at the beach and with her grandchildren and family, she also loved to eat. She had a heart of gold and a laugh that could make anyone smile. She was always quick with her wit when people would joke with her. Her home was open to everyone and she enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. She received her formal education from the Newport News Public School System while she worked in the Newport News Shipbuilding (Huntington Ingalls) as a burner. After 30 plus years of committed service to the yard, she retired.
In addition to her parents, Audrey was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Evans (Virgie) of Grafton, Virginia and her sister, Felecia Evans of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She leaves to cherish one brother, Ronald Evans (Connie) of Long Beach, California; four daughters, Pamela Totten-Browning (Larry) of Hampton, Virginia, Donna Lynn Hill (Robert) of Newport News, Virginia, Stacey Canty (Eric) of Newport News, Virginia and Cynthia Hargraves (Joseph Shears) of Newport News, Virginia; three sons, Joseph Totten, Jr. (Michaela aka Mickey) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Douglas Totten (Brigetta aka Getti) of Newport News, Virginia and Albert Totten (Felecia) of Hampton, Virginia. She has eleven grandchildren, Natasha Gooding, Amanda Totten, Marvin Totten, Stephon Totten, Sharmonique Dove, Simone Hill, Alvin (James) Hargraves, Jr., Tamya Pope, Erica Moore, Taneshia Moore and Charles Canty, Jr.; and fourteen great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, September 15, 2023 at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be from 3-6 p.m., Thursday, September 14, 2023 at the funeral home and from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service on Friday. O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
