Barbara B. Hawkins, peacefully transitioned on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at her home.  She was born on August 28, 1937, Halifax County, Virginia to Robert E. and Parry L. Bratcher.

She graduated from G. W. Carver High School, Newport News, Virginia, class of 1954.  She was a proud member of the G. W. Carver School High Alumni Association for many years.

She was employed by the City of Newport News Public Schools from 1974-1994 as a secretary in the Guidance Department at Menchville High School.  She retired from Menchville High School at the age of 62.

Her love was watching the Young & Restless from 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm and the Bold and Beautiful from 1:30 pm – 2:00 pm.  After losing her sight she would listen to those two soaps royally.  The majority of those times while watching or listening to the soaps, she would not answer the phone; if she did answer, she would most likely rush you off of the phone politely telling you she will call you back.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Hawkins; her parents, Robert E. and Parry L. Bratcher; and her sister, Lillie A. Meekins.

She is survived by her sons, Michael W. Cornelius and Edwin Hawkins; two grandsons, one granddaughter, and four great grandchildren; One special nephew, Norman W. Crowder (Vicki); one niece, Cynthia J. Lawson (Darren); a very special friend, Betty Carter and a host of other family and friends.

Viewing will be from 3-6 p.m. on Thursday, January 27, 2022 at the funeral home.  A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, January 28, 2022 at Hampton Memorial Gardens.  O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
