Bertha Stanback Miller went to be with the Lord on February 19, 2017 after fighting cancer for years. She was born March 5, 1926 in Mt. Gilead, Richmond Co., NC to the late Arthur Stanback and Gertrude Ingram Stanback.

She was educated in the Mt. Gilead, Richmond Co., NC school system. She retired from the Gloria Manufacturing Co. as a seamstress.

She was a faithful and dedicated charter member of Messiah Baptist Church, Newport News, VA until her health failed. She served as a Sunday School teacher, member of the Senior Choir, Usher Board, Food Service Ministry and worked with the Vacation Bible School.

She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Anna Green Stanback; her husband of 59 years, Manes Miller; son, James Arthur Miller, Sr.; grandson, James Arthur "Jay" Miller, Jr.; granddaughter, Jamie Miller; two sisters, Jannie Ledbetter and Katie Rainey; and seven brothers, George, Jacob, Leroy, Odell, Walter, James Arthur and Freddie Stanback.

She leaves to cherish her memory a faithful, loving, and attentive daughter, Bertha L. Miller Debnam Burnette; granddaughter, Candace Renae Coston Miller; great granddaughter, Tinasia Miller; grandson, Leon Alexander Anthony; dedicated daughter-in-law, Sabrina Orie Miller Anthony; sisters, Eva Ann Dykes of Mt. Gilead, NC and Sandra Barnaby of Brooklyn, NY; brothers, Jimmy Stanback (Pat) of Long Island, NY and Melvin Stanback of Albemarle, NC; sisters-in-law, Rev. Ann Stanback of High Point, NC and Fannie M. Stanback Porter of Portsmouth, VA; a very special friend, Deacon Willie Lindsey of Portsmouth, VA; supportive and faithful nieces, Carolyn Harris and Alfreda Patterson of Newport News, VA; supportive nephew, Ronald Ingram (Pamela) of Woodbridge, VA; many she adopted as her children to include, Linda Carney and Valerie Ward of Hampton, VA, the Davenport children; many nieces, nephews, close friends, Gloria Manufacturing family and her church family.

A homegoing service will be held 12 noon, Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Messiah Baptist Church, 1152 -24th St., Newport News. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be from 1-6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and two hours prior to the service at the church on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Messiah Baptist Church Building Fund.
