Byron Lavern Winbush was born in Newport News, VA, on January 11, 1958 to the late Arnell Winbush (Griffin) and Paul Winbush. Byron passed away Friday morning, February 10, 2023 after fighting a prolonged illness.

Byron received Christ at an early age and was baptized at St. Alphonsus Catholic

Church, later, he served as an Altar Boy at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. He participated in many youth programs at the church.

Byron attended Warwick High School in Newport News, the Class of 1976. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he became an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist. While in Denver, CO, he met and married Vickie Douglas of Miami, FL in 1981. Years later they welcome their son Byron Winbush, Jr.

Following an Honorable Discharge from the Army in 1985, Byron and his family resided in Newport News, VA. In later years they joined Gethsemane Baptist Church of Newport News, VA. He became an EMT with the Hampton Fire Department followed by many other ventures.

After over a decade of living in Fort Worth and Dallas, Texas, Byron returned to Virginia in September 2022 to be near family and friends. His constant companion, his dog Penny, bought him much joy. Byron enjoyed fishing with his son and youngest niece, music, and harmonizing in song. He loved being around family and meeting up with close childhood friends, which he revered as family.

He leaves behind his son, Byron Winbush Jr.; sister, Sandra Winbush-DeWindt; two nieces, Ashley Winbush and Danielle DeWindt; aunts, Elizabeth Mossen, Juanita Nazareth, Janice Powell and uncle, Lionel Powell Sr. Plus, a bonus aunt, Herlena Williams, and a host of cousins that he adored.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 25, 2023 at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home.  O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
