Cora Lee Burwell was born January 10, 1942 in Rocky Mount Carolina and transitioned from this life on January 31, 2022. She was the only girl born to the late Ernest Carmichael, Sr. and Teresa Alston.
" Cora Lee," as she was fondly called by many, later moved to Newport News with her parents. She was a graduate of the Carver High School Class of 1961. She loved those "Trojans."
Cora married the love of her life, Ronald L. Burwell, Sr., and they remained a union for forty-eight years. She retired from Langley Air Force Base after many years of service.
Cora never had any children of her own, but always opened her doors to many. Many children called her "Mom." She was a very kindhearted, gentle, sweet person who never met a stranger.
Cora was preceded in death by her parents. Her brother, Ernest Carmichael, Jr., followed her in death three days later. Left to cherish fond memories are her husband of forty-eight years, Ronald L. Burwell, Jr.; stepchildren, Anthony Burwell (Velma), Ronald Burwell, Sr. (Shenevia), and Rosemary Simms, and Fred Mears, who she raised;adopted son, Mark Johnson; godchildren, Richard Lewis and Sherry Stevens; siblings, Andrew "Butch" Granger and Shepard Earl Carmichael; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2022, 11:00 am at O.H. Smith & Son Funeral Home. Viewing will be from 3-6 pm, Friday, February 11, 2022, at the funeral home. O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
