Obituary

On the evening of November 5, 2024, God saw fit to call his angel, Dannie Mae Chapman, home to her eternal rest.  Born in Dallas County in Selma, Alabama, on May 12, 1935, to Jimmy Sr. and Mary Dennis, Dannie accepted Christ at an early age.  She graduated from Keith High School in Browns, Alabama and attended Selma University in Selma, Alabama.  She would meet her husband, William Henry Chapman, from which six children were born from this union.  During her formative years, she was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Newport News, Virginia.  After relocating to the Denbigh area, she then became a faithful member of First Baptist Church Denbigh under the pastoral direction of Reverend Albert Hill, Reverend Herbert Hill, and Reverend Ivan T. Harris.  She served as a deaconess and the chairperson of the missionary board.  She was also involved in the gospel chorus under the direction of Mrs. Eva Brunson and later, Mr. Anthony Witherspoon.  She was employed at the Naval Weapons Station and later at Eastern State Hospital as a certified nursing assistant where she served for twenty-five years.  Dannie enjoyed traveling to visit family and friends domestically and internationally.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon William H. Chapman; son, Reverend Dennis P. Chapman; nine siblings, Roberta, James, Craig, Walsh, Lillian, Willie, Clarence, Roosevelt, Alan; and three grandchildren.  She is survived by five children, William (Maurizia), Sandra, Jacqueline (Alan), Steven (Ingrid), and Brenda; sister-in-law, Alberta Dennis; twelve grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 18, 2024 at First Baptist Church Denbigh.  Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News.  Viewing will be from 12-3 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, 2024 at the funeral home and from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service at the church on Monday.  O.
