David Douglas Cooper departed this earth on Monday, September 21, 2020.  He was born November 6, 1931 in Gloucester, VA.  He later moved with his parents, the late Julian and Rebecca Cooper, to Philadelphia, PA.  He returned to Virginia and graduated from George P. Phenix High School in 1950.  He attended Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, May 1974.

Prior to attending Hampton Institute, David served in the Air Force.  As a veteran, he delighted in talking about his adventures and his duties while in service to his country.

David was employed at Hampton Institute/Hampton University as a Security and Safety officer for approximately twenty years.  He later moved to Brooklyn, NY where he served as Director of Campus Safety and Security at Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York for about fifteen years.  In his new position, David was responsible for the overall security planning for the Institution and supervision of a contract guard service for the College's three campuses.  After retiring from Medgar Evers College, he returned to Hampton, VA and began another rewarding career at Sparetimes Bowling Center for another fifteen years.  As an avid bowler, working at Sparetimes was not only his job, but his love and passion.  He enjoyed sharing his love for bowling with his family, the youth and other bowlers. He loved Moonlight bowling and would always invite other to enjoy it with him.

David was a generous and loving person who frequently gave to strangers, especially if he felt there was a need.  It was not uncommon for him to give money to people on the street or in stores to pay for purchases, as he enjoyed making people happy.

David was previously married to the late Mrs. Jeanette Cooper and from that union were two sons, David Jr. and Asa.

David leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 34 years, Jorsene; sons, David, Jr. (Henri) of Mitchellville, MD and Asa B. of Hampton, VA; grandchildren, Courtney Y. and Asa B., Jr.; great-grandchildren, Cardell, Kayla, Alexis, Khloe, Harlem, Asa, III and Christian; step-children, Anita, Veronica, and Kenneth; grandchildren, Maria, Joey, Crystal, Jessica, and James; great-grandchildren, Kamoni, Tykira, Faith, Dayveon and Nicole; and Aaron & Ryan Morris, who he was a special grandparent, and other relatives and friends.  He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Cecelia Brock and grandson, Dominique David Cooper.

A public visitation will be held Thursday, October 8, 2020 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at O. H. Smith and Son Funeral Home in Newport News. Due to COVID 19, the funeral service will be priviate and can be viewed below.
