Debra Oakley Cooper transitioned from this life into eternal rest on Friday, May 6, 2022, after a most courageous fight with cancer. She peacefully departed with her son, Dwayne, by her side.
Affectionately known as Debbie to family and friends, she was born to David and Aline Oakley in Pittsburgh, PA on November 29, 1953. She attended Huntington High School in Newport News, VA and graduated from Kee Business College with an Associate's Degree in Accounting. Debra Cooper worked at the Newport News Shipyard for over 25 years. Sister Cooper held one of the highest-ranking positions in the Order of the Eastern Star for the state of Virginia. She also loved travelling with her brothers and sisters on trips across the United States.
Debra loved her family and community and would always be there in times of need. She was blessed with a special and unique spirit and was a good friend to all that knew her. Ms. Cooper was a dedicated servant and devoted much of her life to helping others.
She is preceded in death by her parents, David and Aline Oakley; son, Lamont Oakley; and brothers, David and Charles Oakley.
She leaves to cherish her memory, son, Dwayne Oakley (Jackie); one brother, Steve Oakley; three sisters, Catherine Wilkins, Charlene Yarborough, and Patricia Boone; three grandchildren, Zermond Dennison, Kristian Thomas, and Marlin Powell; two great-grandchildren; five nieces; five nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life for Debra Oakley Cooper will be held Tuesday, May 17, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, 5500 Marshall Avenue, Newport News, VA. Viewing will be from 3-6 p.m. on Monday, May 16, 2022 at the funeral home and two hours prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
