Obituary of Edward Lawrence Horne Sr. (1942-2019)

On Tuesday July 30, 2019 God, in His infinite wisdom, called home Edward Lawrence Horne Sr. (Larry) as he is known.  He was born on March 29, 1942 to Willie Horne and Olivia Francis Horne of Newport News Virginia.  Being formally educated in the Newport News Public School System, he attended Huntington High School, graduating in the class of "61."  Upon deciding to further his education, he attended Votech Trade School receiving certifications in Architecture. He later earned two other certifications one as a master Electrician and one in Construction.    At this time, he was drafted in the Vietnam War serving honorably in the 45th Engineering group.  He was the first black Army Diver recovering ordinances and fallen commands.  He ended his service in February of 1968.  After the war, he married his high school sweetheart, Catherine Y. Young.  To this union two children were born:  Edward L. Horne Jr. (deceased) and Tamika Luster (Tami).  Larry pursued his career in the employ of Newport News Shipbuilding from 1968 -2003 with 35 years of service as a Master Electrician.

Larry will be remembered for being a "Renaissance man" and a jack of all trades.  He was an Architect, Electrician, Carpenter, Builder, Artist, Musician, Athlete, and self- described (PRINCE). He loved to socialize and host family gatherings.  He was very active in the community and with his alumni association of Huntington High school class of "61". Larry had an entrepreneurial spirt which led him to launch several businesses, one of which was Atlantic Builders Inc. Later, he helped launch Black Kettle Grill and Seafood Catering which was his proudest achievement!

His many passions included traveling with his wife (CAT), dressing to the nines, cooking gourmet meals, fishing, playing tennis, and eating ice cream.  He was called Prince because he had to have his way in most things.  As Edward navigated his way through his illness, his faith in God grew strong and he was baptized.

He leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Tamika Luster, grandsons, Terrell Luster III, Taji Luster, Troy Luster, and Edward Horne III (Trey). Brother in laws Robert L. Young Sr., Jerome Young Sr., Sister in laws Gwendolen Horne ,Ann Young, Teresa Young, Harriet White, nephews Keith Horne Jr(Wendell),and Mabili Akinyele. Nieces Robin Anderson, Lisa Hughes, Penny Verliy, Debbie Holloway, and Alicia Young. He also leaves behind in memory his beloved grandnieces and nephews, relatives, neighbors, and friends. His beloved best friends "brothers" and cut buddies, John T. Wheeler and Ralph Christian.

We will miss the father, grandfather, brother, uncle, classmate, and friend "Larry." Rest in Peace, and be present with the Lord.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 9, 2019 at Second Baptist Church East End.  Viewing will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, followed by a wake service from 6 to 7 p.m.  at the funeral home.  Mr. Horne will lie in state two hours prior to the service at the church on Friday.  O.
