Franchot "Skiggy" "Big Ski" Powell

A much loved father, grandfather, brother and uncle.

Franchot Powell, 74, was born October 5, 1944 to Celeste and Doug Powell in Newark, NJ.  He passed away peacefully at home on January 3, 2019 with his long term companion Geneva Taylor and her brother William Taylor. He bravely confronted and fought heart disease.

Skiggy resided in East Orange and Orange, NJ until he moved to Hampton, Virginia on March 16, 2013 where he spent his remaining days.  He graduated from East Orange High School in 1962.  He enlisted in the United States Army where he completed a three year term.  Skiggy also became an Essex County Corrections Officer at the Newark, NJ jail.

He is survived by his son, Franchot Taylor and his fiance, Linda Eanes; granddaughters, Imani Taylor and Janayah Britt; brothers, Frederick D. Powell, Jr. and Ryland Powell; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, January 17, 2019 at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home.  Viewing will be from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service on Thursday.  O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
