Mrs. Gwendolyn L. Vick, 97, peacefully entered the gates of heaven on October 23, 2026, in Hampton, VA. She was born on November 24, 1928, in Newport News, VA, to Eli Holloman and Blanche Moore. She was the second of two children.
She was educated in Newport News public schools, where she attended Huntington High School. She was known throughout the community for her support and service as foster grandparent where she assisted teachers at Achievable Dream. She also supported the Huntington High School band as an avid band booster. She was Den Mother in the Cub Scouts and worked closely with Mr. Moyler and Boy Scouts Troop 62. She was the neighborhood mom as her home welcomed all those on 32nd Street and all East End for that matter.
She was a member of Second Baptist Church, East End, Newport News, Virginia where she served on several ministries. She enjoyed reading and completing word puzzles, watching old TV shows, wrestling and the Washington Commanders. She had many friends and enjoyed their regular visits and long telephone conversations. She loved Joan Neal, Sally Walker, Annette Wilson, and Annie Walker like family, and we want to thank them for the many hours and visits spent with her.
She was predeceased by her husband, William C. Vick, Jr., her son, Gregory K. Vick; father, Eli Holloman, mother, Blanche Moore; brother, Keith Moore; and grandson, Jamal Walker and longtime friend Doris Brown.
She is survived by two sons, William C. Vick III (Gwendolyn) and Rev. Dr. Norman D. Vick (Mary); five grandchildren, Cullen B. Vick, Gregory K. Vick (Kristin), Greta Wright, Dwight P. Vick (Chanise), Kim Vick, eight great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Though we are sad, and our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in the fond memories we all share and hold dear. We will miss her.
A viewing will be held from 3-6 PM on Monday, November 16, 2026, at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home, where relatives and friends will be received.
