Henry Alvester Steward, Sr., 82, transitioned from labor into reward on Thursday, July 14, 2022 surrounded by his loved ones. Henry was born on March 19, 1940 to the late John Steward and Beatrice Grant. Educated in the Newport News Public School System, Henry graduated from Huntington High School in 1958 where he met his high school sweetheart, Sarah Joyce Cummings and married and from this union, three children were born. He devoted 42 years to the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company X43 department, now known as Northrop Grumman Shipyard. He also worked for the Hampton Public School System for many years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Joyce Steward and son Henry A. Steward, Jr.

He is survived by son, Aaron Steward, daughter, Sheila Augburn (Gregory); grandkids, Eric, Melanie, Christopher, D'Nijah and Tyrell Steward, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Viewing will be held from 3 - 6 p.m. on Friday, July 22, 2022 at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home. The funeral service will be private.
