On Saturday morning, July 28, 2018, Herbert L. Henderson US Army Retired Master Sergeant went to be with the Lord. He was born April 18, 1930 in Lake Providence, Louisiana. God blessed him with 88 years of life.
Herbert was the third born of eleven children to the late Reverend P.H. and Mary Henderson. He accepted Christ at an early age under the tutelage of his father.
In 1951, he married the love of his life, Harriette J. Thompson. They were married for 58 years and from this union came three children, Herbert Jr., Steven, and Linda. He was a loving husband, devoted father, and true friend. He served in the United States Army for 30 years and worked in the United States Postal Service for 10 years.
Herbert was a faithful member of Providence Baptist Church. He was an active member of the Retired Armed Forces Club and the Orcutt Senior Citizens Group. His hobbies included his passion for videography and photography.
As Herbert goes on to be with his lovely wife, he leaves behind to treasure his memory, sons, Herbert L. Henderson, Jr. of Portland, OR and Steven Henderson (Sonya) of Suffolk, VA; daughter, Linda Henderson Smith (Franky) of Harvest, AL; eight grandchildren, Tim (Dana), Paul (Kierra), Philip, Daniel (Tiondra), Josh, Ariel, Briana, and Chris; ten great grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Childress of Fresno, CA, Shirley Lenoir (Hamp) of Bastrop, LA, Barbara Cason (Alfonzo) of Denver, CO, Rosa Semien of Houston, TX, Lena Montgomery (Leodis) of Missouri City, TX; sister-in-law, Katie Bond of Hampton, VA; special goddaughter, Janie Truitt King of Hampton, VA; special daughter, Joyce Caesar of Durham, NC; a host of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, August 3, 2018 at Providence Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. Mr. Henderson will lie in state from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service at the church on Friday. Viewing will begin at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home followed by a wake service from 6 to 7 p.m. O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
