Herbert L. Whitaker, Sr., 88, transitioned peacefully at the James River Convalescent Center on Wednesday, November 25, 2020.

"Lil Buddy," as he was affectionately called, was born in Enfield, North Carolina on September 17, 1932 to the late Joseph B. and Viora Whitaker. He grew up in a family with eight brothers and two sisters.

"Lil Buddy" was employed at NASA as a Technical Engineer and retired after 35 years of service.

He was preceded in death by son, Michael A. Whitaker, Sr.; brothers, Junius Whitaker, Howard Whitaker, Percell Whitaker, Rudolph Whitaker, Melvin Whitaker, Alvin Whitaker and The Honorable Joseph Whitaker (former Vice Mayor of Newport News); sisters, Dorothy Mae Robinson and Bernice Jackson.

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Catherine; children, Herbert L. Whitaker, Jr., Marlene Cashwell (Irvin), Karen Warren, Gregory Whitaker, Brenda Baker, David Whitaker and Timothy Whitaker; brother, Charles Whitaker; sisters-in-law, Marion Whitaker and Delores Whitaker; 18 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephew, other relatives and friends.
