In Loving Memory of Brother Hubert Joyner

Hubert Joyner was born on November 21, 1937, in Nash County, North Carolina, to the late Deacon William Joyner and Mother Emma Farmer Joyner.

He was born into a large and loving family and was preceded in death by his siblings: Hattie, James, William, Bertha, Minnie, Margaret, Roosevelt, Cleophus, Henry, Agnes, Etta, Oliver, J.C., and Katie.

Hubert attended school in Nash County and went on to serve his country in the United States Army. He was stationed in Europe and Germany during his military service.

On July 27, 1959, he married the love of his life, the late Bernice Mozelle Battle. Their union was blessed with two children, Kim and Hubert Ramon.

From a young age, Hubert possessed a strong entrepreneurial spirit. He owned and operated Joyner’s Market on 32nd Street and Madison Avenue, a beloved neighborhood store where families shopped and children delighted in purchasing butter cookies for a penny.

Throughout his working career, Hubert was employed at Newport News Shipbuilding for five years and Pentran for three years. He later dedicated 34 years of service to the United States Postal Service, retiring as a Special Delivery Driver.

Hubert was an active member of the Dochiki Social and Civic Club, where he served on the Board of Trustees. Although not an official member of the Corvette Club, many will fondly remember seeing him proudly driving his beautiful, shiny Corvette in local parades.

Brother Joyner was known for his impeccable style. He was always a sharp dresser who loved to smell good. Family and friends will forever remember his confident strut, his cowboy boots, and his signature straw hats.

Most importantly, Brother Joyner was a faithful and devoted member of St. Paul AME Church. He faithfully served on the Trustee Board, was an active member of the Sons of Allen and for a short time, was a member of the Male Chorus.

His legacy of faith, hard work, service, and love will be forever cherished by his children, Hubert Ramon, Kim, Candace, and the late Bobby (Doris); granddaughters, Raven and Aubree; grandson, Terrell; sisters-in-law, Claretta Battle and Effie Joyner; brothers-in-law, Cedric Outlaw (Shawanda), William “WJ” Rogers (Sallie), and Andrew Woods; goddaughter, Pamela Washington (Terry); the “Breakfast Crew, William “Butch” Bowser, Lawrence Buckner and Frank Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and adopted children whose lives have been enriched by his love and generosity.

Brother Hubert Joyner leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew and loved him.

Viewing will be from 3-6 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2026 at the funeral home.  Homegoing Celebration will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 12, 2026 at St. Paul AME Church, 2500 Chestnut Avenue, Newport News, VA. O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
