Obituary

Irvin H. Major, Jr., 82, departed this life on April 20, 2026.

Here is his story...

I was born May 15, 1943 at 3213 Chestnut Avenue, Newport News, VA.  I was given the name Irvin Housemum Major Jr. My parents were Irvin Housemum Major Sr. of Williamsburg, VA.  My mother was Ursula Winifred Tynes of Smithfield, VA.  Out of their marriage, they had 3 children; Irvin Jr., Paul and Paulette (twins).

After my mother's death in 1946 (August 20), we were raised by Cora Tynes (Arrington) Ballard and Eddie Ballard of Newport News, VA.  Cora was my mother's sister.

I was educated in Newport News Public Schools.  I was in the Class of 1962, Huntington High School.  In 1965 (June 5), I married Thelma L. Major (Smith).  I have to admit, I hit bumps in the road.  We renewed our wedding vows in 1998.

I could see myself changing for the good with God leading me.  I joined FBCH in 2001 under the leadership of Rev. Booth.  I became a Greeter, served on the Men's Action Ministry, was a Night Welcome Volunteer, Sunday School member of St. Paul Sunday Class.  I was a faithful member of FBCH.  My main goal was Sunday School, Church and God.

I leave behind my wife, Thelma, whom I love dearly and will miss dearly. His daughter, Belinda; adopted daughter, Monica (Marc); 16 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

At last I will see my dad, my mother, my grandparents (on both sides), my aunts, my uncles, cousins, my sister, my brother and my son.

I have worked on cars and trucks.  I have done my dance, and now I am ready to rest from my labor.  Please love one another.  Be good to one another.  I will see you all soon.

Do not let this be a sad time.  Let us be joyful and celebratory because I have gone to my final resting place to be with the Lord, to rejoin my family and friends.

I want to be remembered for my sharp wit, my helping others, and my caring and loving attitude, music, dancing, cars and a Fan of Washington Commanders.

I loved my family, and I loved being loved by my family.
