James Patterson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and uncle departed this life on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, in Hampton, Virginia at the age of 92. He was born in Laurinburg, NC on March 20, 1929, the son of the late Maggie Patterson, and the older brother of the late Benjamin Patterson.
'Pat,' as he was known to family and friends, received his early education in Newport News, Virginia. He attended Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Arts in 1951. He graduated as an ROTC Commissioned Officer and began his service in the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. During his 20 years of service, he traveled with his family extensively, and served one tour of duty in the Korean war, one tour in the Vietnam War and two tours of duty in Germany. He retired as a decorated officer in October 1971.
Pat married his sweetheart Janet Wrenn on June 4, 1955, and together they built a life with their two children. After his retirement from the Army, they returned to Hampton and Pat remained active in the community for the remainder of his life. He owned and managed Sonnies Inn for many years, was a realtor with Century 21 Nachman Realty, and participated in social clubs and community organizations.
He is survived by his wife, Janet, daughter Donna Patterson, son Kurt Patterson, five nephews: Carey Patterson (Rosa), Errol Patterson (Betty), Jason Wrenn, Louis Wrenn (Marie), David Dixon, three grandchildren: Spencer Patterson, Cherika Robles, and DuJuan Vass; and an extended family of cousins and close friends. Pat will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, 11am, at the O.H. Smith & Son Funeral Home in Newport News, Virginia.
