John L. Swindell entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, October 29th, 2025 at Riverside Regional Hospital. He was born November 1, 1943 in Whiteville, North Carolina.

John lovingly addressed as Brother, was the fourth child of five siblings and the only son to the late Johnie C. Swindell and Ida M. Swindell.

John was educated in the Newport News school system in Virginia. After graduating high school and a couple of jobs in Virginia he decided it was time for a change to relocate to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

John resided in Philadelphia for years where he met Doris Foster. They were blessed with a son John L. Foster.

He worked as an Auto mechanic in Philadelphia and he met Ann Swindell who he married for 38 years of happiness before he was called home. After his long stay in Philadelphia, John decided to move back to Virginia in the late 80's where three of his siblings were.

On John's returning to Virginia, he was a member of Pandora's Elk Lodge #02 where he participated in charitable events for his local community. He was employed as a tour bus driver for a short period of time until he; discovered that community service was his passion to mentor young children, care for the homeless, feed the hungry people and other charitable events throughout the Peninsula.  Being obedient to the Lord, he began driving and serving people on the street for the Salvation Army and became the Transportation Director. John loved doing what he was called to do. He worked doing what he loved until he retired.

His legacy is one of faith, love, perseverance and compassion. We thank God for his life and for the many years he let us have him. Prayerfully, his walk will continue to encourage many generations to come.

He leaves behind to cherish his many fond memories his wife Ann J. Swindell, one son John L. Foster (Karen); Cynthia Bryant (George), Richard Malone (Kim), Patricia Johnson (Darren), David Johnson (Ingrid) Kim West-Sears (Herman), 3 Grandchildren John A. Foster (Cori), Joseph F. Foster and Morgan A. Foster. 2 great grandchildren; 3 sisters Dorothy Mattocks, Glarucia Swindell-Lewis and Gladys Thorpe 3 nieces, several great nieces, great nephews and other loving relatives and friends.

There will be a viewing held at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home from 9 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, The Pandora Elk Lodge #02 service will begin at 11:00 a.m. followed by a celebration of life service at 12 noon.
