Obituary

Johnnie Porter, affectionately known as "PJ" quietly slipped into eternal rest on Friday, April 21, 2023 at Mary Immaculate Hospital. He was born December 25,1936 to Rufus and Sarah Porter of Franklin, Virginia.

He was educated at Camptown Viginia Public School in Isle of Wight County, Virginia and later served in the United States Army for 33 years. Johnnie served two tours in Vietnam and Korea where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Air Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), Vietnam Service Medal (Silver Service Star) and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Sharp Shooter (Rifle).

After retirement he worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and was Chief of Security for the Hampton Coliseum Mall for several years.

Johnnie was also a member of the Dochiki Civic and Social Club for 27 years and served as the Chaplain.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta Jones Porter; parents, Rufus and Sarah Porter; sister, Dorothy M. West; brother, Rufus D. Porter; and a great grandson, Taj Anderson.

He leaves to cherish his memory and celebrate his life, his daughter, Malinda Dawson (John) of Franklin, Virginia; son, Johnnie Porter, Jr. (Dorothy) of Houston Texas; brother, William Porter of Newport News, Virginia; special companion, Jeanie Porter "Baby cake" of Newport News, Virginia; brother-in-law, Robert Smith (Charlene) of Houston Texas; 11 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral Service will be 11 a.m., Monday, May 1, 2023 at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home.  Viewing will be from 12-3 p.m., Saturday, April 29, 2023 at the funeral home.  O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
