Johnny Roosevelt Merritt Sr., 89, of Hampton, Virginia, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2026. Born on November 3, 1936, Johnny lived a full, rich life centered on his deep devotion to his family, faith, and community.

A Legacy of Family & Hard Work A man of profound work ethic, Johnny dedicated over 50 years of service as a skilled Pipefitter and retired from Norfolk Naval Base Department of Public Works. Throughout his distinguished career, he worked at the Newport News Shipbuilding and the Naval Yard. He later extended his service to the Newport News Public Schools and the Yorktown Visitors Center. He strongly believed in the value of hard work, a principle he proudly instilled in his children. Outside of his profession, Johnny was happiest in the fresh air. He loved watching Westerns and was an avid fisherman who took great joy in family seafood gatherings…especially sharing crabcakes and blue crab.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Reverend John Merritt and Edith Merritt, and his cherished wife, Cynthia Merritt (née Barnes). 

Johnny’s strength, love, and legacy continue through his five devoted children: ● Vickie Harrison, Hampton, VA ● Johnny (Jackie) Merritt Jr., Newport New, VA ● Marcus (Denise) Merritt, Caseyville, IL ● Alexis Merritt, Hampton, VA ● Jeremy (Pamela) Merritt, Waldorf, MD. He also leaves behind a proud lineage of 11 grandchildren as well as a host of cherished great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 27, 2026 at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home. Viewing will be from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of the service on Thursday. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
