Joyce Wilson Chapman was born July 11, 1934 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.  She was the seventh of eight children born to Blossie and Carrie Horne.

Joyce graduated as salutatorian from Booker T. Washington High School in Rocky Mount. She then matriculated to what was then North Carolina Central College (NCCU) earning a Bachelor's Degree in English and Library Science.  While at North Carolina Central College, Joyce became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, sang in the college choir and served as a dormitory counselor.

Having taught first in Weldon, North Carolina, Joyce eventually moved to Newport News, Virginia accepting a job with the Newport News School System.  She served first at Huntington High School as an assistant librarian and later retired 32 years later as the head librarian from what then became Huntington Middle School.

Joyce married John Wilson, Jr. February 6, 1960 and to their union was born three children.

After the death of her husband, Joyce married Deacon Timothy Chapman, Sr. and they were married for more than 20 years.

She was a member of St. John Church of God in Christ under the leadership of the late Bishop Samuel L. Green, Jr. and Elder Samuel L. Green, III.

In 2016 she was appointed District Missionary of the Peninsula District of Virginia Second Jurisdiction of the C.O.G.I.C.   She served joyfully and faithfully under the dynamic leadership of Mother Jacquelin G. Holmes, Superintendent Emeritus Michael Golden, Sr., and Episcopal Assignee Bishop Michael Golden, Jr.

As her health began to decline in 2022, District Missionary Joyce Chapman respectfully retired from her position and became District Missionary Emerita.

On March 1, 2023, Joyce received the clarion call from labor to reward.  She was predeceased by her husbands, John Wilson, Jr., and Timothy Chapman, Sr.; parents, Blossie and Carrie Horne; her siblings, Mavis, Willie, Evelyn, Gladys, Bertha Imogene, James and Margelyn.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Rhonda (Ronald), Becky (George), John (Carmella); bonus son, Superintendent Larry C. Miles, Sr.(Terraine); stepchildren, Robert, Ronald and Timothy, Jr.; grandchildren Ronald Andre Watson, III (Ranisha), George McCadden, III, Camille Alexandra McCadden and Jadyn Camille Wilson; great granddaughter Madison Rose Watson; Life-Long Sister-Friend, Delores Spencer; Sisters-in-Love, Anna Wilson, Priscilla B. Wilson, D. Barbara W. Farmer, and Mary P. Horne; a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, spiritual daughters and friends.

The homegoing celebration will be held at 11a.m. on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Bethel Temple Church, 1705 Todds Lane, Hampton, Virginia 23666.  Viewing will be from 3-6 p.m. on Monday, March 13, 2023 at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home.

Affectionately known as "Mama Joyce", Joyce Wilson Chapman was a champion for both education and salvation. Through her monthly monetary gifts of encouragement to college students, Joyce has been an inspiration for those who are now doctors, educators, lawyers, health professionals, theologians and the like.  She was known for her spirit of hospitality and love for cooking.  She will be greatly missed by many.  O.
