Kathy "KT" Maria Hope Tate peacefully entered eternal rest on January 13, 2026, at the age of 66. Born on April 20, 1959, to Constance and Merritt Hope, Sr., Kathy lived a life filled with purpose, laughter, and unwavering devotion to the people she loved.

Kathy made her professional mark as a talented CAT Scan and X-ray Technologist. She began her medical career at Hampton General Hospital before marrying and relocating to Richmond, VA. While in Richmond, she worked at Retreat Doctors' Hospital and later returned home to Hampton, where she eventually retired from Sentara Health Systems. Her dedication, skill, and compassion touched countless patients throughout her many years of service.

A true lover of sports, Kathy enjoyed playing soccer, but her heart belonged to football—and especially to her beloved Dallas Cowboys. Known for proudly declaring, "I'm a STAR, baby!" she embraced the team with undeniable passion. Her family lovingly referred to her as a "delusional Cowboys fan," as she joyfully and relentlessly defended her belief that Dak Prescott was the greatest quarterback of all time. Anyone who talked sports with her knew they were in for a spirited debate. Kathy also had a deep love for seafood, enjoying it every chance she could.

Kathy was a proud graduate of Bethel High School, where she excelled academically, earning membership in the National Honors Society and graduating near the top of her class.

Kathy and her former husband, Hezekiah Andrew Tate, shared a lifelong bond. She leaves to cherish her memory her children: Shaunte Cary, Shane Cary, Summer Tate, and Derrick Allen, along with her bonus son, Jamon Drummond. Her legacy continues through her beloved grandchildren: Camryn Cary, Rome Stone, Xayvier Cary, Sumyah Tate, Ashawn Perry, and Romello Stone.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Constance and Merritt Hope, Sr.; her sisters, Janice Swanson and Jessica (Johnnay) Gurly; her brothers, Merritt (Mert) Hope, Jr. and Wilton Hope; and her nieces and nephews: Philip, Roderick, Randy, Rochell, and Constance (Connie).

She is survived by one sister, Muriel Lloyd, and two brothers, Michael Hope and Herbert Hope, as well as a host of nieces and nephews: Frederick, Maria, Sharron, Angela, Carol, Timothy, Stephanie, Linda, Rosita, Rachel, Tiffany, Wilton (Wootie), Ashley, and Jasmine. She also leaves behind numerous cousins and lifelong friends, including her best friend, Teresa Walker, who remained by her side through all seasons
of life.

Kathy was a devoted member of Second Baptist Church for many years. She also served her community through her work with the Reams Road Association, demonstrating her commitment to helping others and staying actively engaged. Kathy will be remembered for her strength, humor, loyalty, and the radiant love she poured into everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her light will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who loved her.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at Second Baptist Church East End.  Viewing will be from 3-6 p.m. on Friday, January 23, 2026 at the funeral home and two hours prior to the service at the church on Saturday.  O.
