Leslie
Mccallum
d. Sep 28, 2021
Leslie Andrew McCallum, 78, transitioned on September 28, 2021, at his residence in Newport News following a brief illness. Leslie "Les" was the youngest of three sons born to the late John McCallum and the late Lillian Beatrice "Bea" Hamm McCallum.
In 1961, he graduated from Huntington High School and enrolled at Norfolk State University, earning a B.S. degree in architectural drafting, after a two-year period in the U.S. Army. He taught drafting at Huntington High School and Huntington Middle School before retiring after 30 years. His persistent love for teaching led to several years as a substitute, primarily at Warwick High School.
Leslie was baptized at Union Baptist Church at a young age, and remained a faithful lifetime member, always willing to serve whenever needed. He joined the choir, often performing as soloist, and participated in various ministries. His love of music led to mastery in playing the harmonica, ukulele, and guitar. Union Baptist was the love of his life, and Leslie continually invited others to worship.
Leslie enjoyed both his young and old neighbors in the "Salters Creek" neighborhood, and liked visiting them often.
Leslie is survived by his wife, Elaine H. McCallum; two brothers, Leon E. McCallum, Sr. (Carolyn) Carrolton, VA; and John B. McCallum (Brenda) Richmond, VA; one brother-in-law, Benjamin Harps, Jr. (Hampton, VA); one sister-in-law, Leatha Bethel (Miami, FL); a host of nieces, nephews, devoted cousins, and friends.
How will we remember Leslie? … for his love of family, church, and neighborhood.
Viewing will be from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at O.H. Smith & Son Funeral Home. Private Funeral Service for relatives and friends by invitation. O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
