HAMPTON - Please join us in celebrating the life of Lyman (Nick) James Otey. He was born May 27, 1931, the youngest of three sons of the late Rufus and Annie Otey. Lyman transitioned on Monday, June 10, 2024.
Lyman was educated in the Bedford County, VA Schools. He graduated from Virginia State University in 1953 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army.
Lyman served his country with honor for over 26 years and received numerous commendations and awards.
Lyman was a faithful member of Trinity Baptist Church and served in various ministries. He was a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the J. Paul Drake Memorial VFW Post 9376 of Clinton, Maryland.
Lyman will be remembered as a loving husband to Audrey Diggs Otey and Ethel Davis Otey, devoted father to Randall (Mary), Scott (Michelle) and Jacqueline Harris (Clinton), caring grandfather to Matthew Otey, Nicholas Otey, Jeremy Newman (Yasmen), Ayanna Davis, Jamal Davis, Kamilah Wills (Dayne) and great grandfather to Kassidy Wills, Alyssa Wills, Winter Wills, Storm Wills, and Jasmen Newman.
Viewing/Visitation will occur on Thursday, June 27, 2024, 3:00 pm-6:00 pm at the O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home. The viewing will conclude with an Omega Service, conducted by the Hampton Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha.
LTC (retired) Otey will lie in state at the Trinity Baptist Church, 2900 Chestnut Avenue, Newport News, VA on Friday, June 28, 2024, from 10:00 am until the Celebration of Life Service at 11:00 am.
Lyman will be laid to rest at the Hampton Veterans Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 155 Butler Farm Rd., Hampton, VA.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that memorial contributions be made to Trinity Baptist Church in memory of Lyman.
