Celebrating the Life of Margie R. Leonard
With deep love and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Margie R. Leonard, who entered into eternal rest on Monday, May 5, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on December 17, 1934, to the late Rosa and Leroy Lee, Margie lived a life rich in faith, service, and devotion. She was the beloved wife of the late James W. Leonard, Sr., whose love she carried in her heart long after his passing.
Margie was educated in the Newport News Public School System and dedicated many years as a compassionate and skilled nurse at McDonald Army Hospital in Fort Eustis, VA. Her caring nature extended beyond the hospital walls, touching the lives of all who knew her.
She accepted Christ at an early age, living as a devoted Christian and a pillar of Galilee Baptist Church in Newport News, VA. Her voice graced the Senior Choir, and she joyfully served as the Youth Choir Assistant and a member of the Missionary Circle, always finding ways to uplift her church family.
Margie's warmth and generosity were most evident in the loving home she created. She was known for her delicious home-cooking, filling hearts and stomachs with nourishment and love. Her selfless spirit was evident in her unwavering dedication to family, especially her grandchildren, whom she adored beyond measure. Margie's joy, wisdom, and laughter made an everlasting impact on those around her.
Margie was preceded in death by her sons, James W. Leonard, Jr., Kevin Leonard, and Terrance Leonard, as well as her grandson James R. Leonard and great-grandson Deontae Kittles. Though she has gone to glory, her legacy lives on through her devoted daughters, Jewel Bass (John) of Newport News, VA, and Sandra Carney of Richmond, VA, along with her 13 grandchildren—Crystal, Danielle, Juanita, Bianca (Eli), Iesha (Brandon), Rebecca, April (Ivan Sr.), James III, Tracey (Adrian), Shawn (Jasmine), Jewel, Sonya, and Martin—as well as a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, family members, and friends who will forever treasure the love and wisdom she imparted.
Margie's life will be honored with a celebration of life service at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at Galilee Baptist Church, 6012 Jefferson Ave, Newport News, VA. Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens. A viewing will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 9th at the funeral home. O. H.
