Marian Juanita B. Lassiter

Marian Juanita B. Lassiter entered into her heavenly rest on October 12, 2021. She was affectionately called "Poolum" by her dad, "Nanna" by her grandchildren, and simply "Ma" by her two loving sons.

She was born on February 10th, 1949 in Newport News, VA to the late Robert and Norlean Batts; the family soon after relocated to Scotland Neck, NC. She began her early education at Brawley in the Halifax School System there. In 1966 the family moved to Hampton, VA where she completed her high school education at George P. Phoenix High School in 1967.

Not too long after graduation Marian joined West End Baptist Church of Hampton, VA in 1967. She went on to become a member of the senior choir, served on the usher board, and also on the kitchen ministry (and everyone knows about her skills in the kitchen)! She loved her church and was a faithful and supportive member until her health began to take its toll.

She was married on August 26th, 1972 to the late James H. Lassiter of Newport News, VA. God blessed their blissful union with two sons, Jamar and Tyrus.

Marian's first place of employment was as a line cook at the lunch counter in the F.W. Woolworth department store. Her next career move took her to the Safeway grocery store chain where she started working in the deli department as well as doing cake decorations. After leaving Safeway she then went on to work at Food Lion where she again worked in the deli and then moved into the deli manager role. While at Food Lion she worked a wide range of different positions but always came back to her love for cake decorating. She remained at Food Lion for 20'ish years until she retired in 2015. She loved her time there as well as the many coworkers and customers that she befriended over the years.

She adored her family and loved to cook, travel, and spending quality time with her boys. Speaking of her cooking, she seemed to know how to make anything and everything. Having said that, if you ever tried to get a recipe from her it was always, "Oh I just added a little bit of this and a little bit of that". Basically the measurements she used for everything was just that A Little Bit of This and A Little Bit of That . So although you may have had all of the ingredients to replicate the dish, it never tasted quite like Marians'. She had a very giving spirit, always willing to assist with whatever or whenever she was needed. She didn't miss special occasions or birthdays and had an uncanny ability to find the perfect greeting card that seemed like it was personally written by her. She will be missed immensely by all who came to know and love her.

Marian was proceeded in death by her late husband James H. Lassiter, her parents Robert and Norlean Batts, sister-in-laws Barbara Lassiter, Elizabeth Lassiter, Bernice Lassiter, brother-in-laws Teddy Lassiter and Idell Brown.

She leaves to cherish her memories two sons Jamar H. Lassiter (Jennifer) of Newport News, VA and Tyrus J. Lassiter (Shelly) of Frederick, MD. One devoted sister Gloria J. Turner of Hampton, VA. Five grandchildren, Saige Lassiter, Talen Lassiter, Jurnee Lassiter, Jennison Taylor, and Justice Taylor. Two God-daughters Evonne Tillery of Scotland Neck, NC and Davita Tynes of Greensboro, NC and a host of family and friends.

We all have been blessed by her presence and will be forever touched by her grace and gentle loving spirit!

Viewing was from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of the service on Friday, October 22, 2021 at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home in Newport News.  The funeral service followed at 12:00 p.m.
