Mary Edith (Rainey) Augborn, age 87, passed away peacefully on July 30,
2025, at the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Born on December 21, 1938, in Newport News, Virginia, Mary remained deeply
connected to her hometown, living her entire life on the Peninsula.
She was the
beloved wife of Peter Augborn, with whom she shared over 40 wonderful years
of marriage.
Mary was a proud graduate of Huntington High School and later attended
Hampton University and Norfolk State University. She dedicated 30 years of
her career to working in the special education department of Jenkins
Elementary, where she made a lasting impact on the lives of many students
and families.
Mary dearly loved her family, friends, and community. Known for her laughter,
boundless energy, and giving spirit, she had a way of making everyone feel
welcome and cared for. Her presence brightened every room, and she never
hesitated to lend a helping hand.
She was preceded in death by her parents
Lawyer Joseph L. Rainey and Mary
Edith Rainey and her brothers Joe and Smith Rainey.
She is survived by her husband Peter Augborn; son Richard L. and Stephanie Gary; sisters Rosa Terry, Emma Kendrick, and Barbara Flood; brother Lawrence Rainey; nieces Linda Kemp, Crystal Rainey, and Renee Rainey Wright; nephew Michael Terry; and a host of cousins and many other extended family members.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Wesley Grove United Church of Christ, in Newport News, Virginia.
