Melvin Thomas Gross, 80, passed away on May 25, 2021 in his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Newport News, VA to the late Bernard R. Gross and Florine W. Gross. He was predeceased by his sisters, Marion Green and Sophnonia Ponton, as well as, his son, Jonathan Gross. He attended Huntington High School and graduated from Carver High School. He was a welder with Northrop Grumman Shipyard until his retirement in 2002.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, of 58 years, Portia Gross; two sons, Melvin Gross, Jr. of Hampton, VA and Ryan Gross and his wife Denise of Newport News, VA; daughter, Dr. Melissa Gross and her husband Dr. Timothy Lee of Suffolk; brothers, Bernard Gross (Lee) of Hampton, VA and Marty Gross (Michelle) of Carrollton, TX; brother-in-law, James L. Anderson, Jr. of Brooklyn, NY; his beloved grandchildren, Noah Lee, Chloe Gross, Alana Gross and Jayden Gross; along with many other family, friends and devoted neighbors who will miss him dearly.

He was a dedicated grandfather. He attended countless honors and awards ceremonies, sporting events, plays, dance and piano recitals, graduations, family vacations and celebrations for his grandkids. "Granddaddy" was always available for babysitting and moral support.

A service in memory of Melvin's Life will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, June 4, 2021 at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home. O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
