Michael Anthony Monroe, also known as Big Mike, passed away on August 27, 2025, at his residence in Newport News. He was 65 years old.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maryland and Leola Monroe, and grandson Isaiah T. Monroe.

Born September 2, 1959 in Hubert, North Carolina, Michael was a lifelong resident of Newport News. He graduated from Menchville High School and entered the military serving honorably from 1977 to 1983 as a proud Marine.

He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, cousin and friend.

He is survived by his sons, Charles Burnett and Nicolas Monroe, and daughter Rhea Monroe and their mother and his "Bud" Hellen Monroe; his grandchildren Marlee McDuffie, Andreas Noville, Carter Burnett, and Jerome Burnett; brother Jeffrey Monroe, and sister Wanda M. Smith. He also leaves to cherish his memory with many relatives and friends.

Michael's warmth, humor, and kindness will be deeply missed and remembered always.

Inurnment with Military Honors will take place at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia at a later date.  O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
