Michael
Wesson
d. Mar 14, 2021
Michael Eugene Wesson, the only son of Ethel R. and the late Levi Wesson was born on December 6, 1953. He fought a good fight, kept the faith, and finished the race on March 14, 2021.
Michael was educated in the Newport News Public School System, graduating from Menchville High School in 1972, with a diploma and a technical certificate in brick masonry. After graduation, he worked as an orderly at Whitaker Memorial Hospital where he discovered his love for helping people. Michael completed his nursing education and obtained his LPN nursing license in 1977. There were many lives touched during his nursing career, with him having worked at Hampton General, Eastern State, and Mary Immaculate hospitals. He retired from Consulate Health Care of Williamsburg in 2017.
He joined Providence Baptist Church at a young age and remained a member until his death. Prior to finding his passion in nursing, Michael worked as a brick mason, helping to construct the Genesis Hall at the church. It was even in a Sunday School class at Providence that Michael met and married his first wife. Michael would be blessed with one daughter, Veronica Michelle Wesson, and two sons, Michael Eugene Wesson, II and Cecial William Wyrick.
An avid football and jazz fan, Mike could always be found watching the Cowboys or listening to Kenny G. He could also be found under the hood of the cars belonging to his family and friends. He was known to be a charmer and always cracking a joke. His love of lawn maintenance led to him running a lawn care business with his youngest son, Cecial. They worked together for 4 years.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Levi Wesson and two of his sisters, Sharon Wesson Wilson and Harriet McCloud.
Those left to cherish his memory are his mother, Ethel R. Wesson; sister, Debra Wesson Meekins; daughter, Veronica Wesson of Lusby, MD; two sons, Michael Wesson (Amanda) of Durham, NC and Cecial Wyrick (Alissa) of Savannah, GA; step-mother, Delphine Wesson; three nieces, Katrina McCloud, Eboni Meekins Richardson (Melvin) and Lela Meekins; two grandchildren, Donovan Dabney and Brylie Wyrick; aunts, cousins and a host of other relatives and a multitude of friends, including a longtime companion, Delma Mitchell.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home. Viewing will be from 3-6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at the funeral home. O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
