Milton Leon Askew Sr. ("QUE")

August 23, 1946 – February 19, 2025

Milton Leon Askew Sr., affectionately known as "QUE," passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, VA, with his beloved niece, Shawanda Martin, by his side. He was 78 years old.

Born on August 23, 1946, in Hampton, VA, Milton was the son of the late William Edmond Calhoun and Carrie Bell Askew-Martin. A proud graduate of George P. Phenix High School, he later attended Norfolk State University before embarking on a life filled with love, hard work, and unwavering dedication to his family.

Milton was a devoted husband to his loving wife of 56 years, Rosemary Radcliff-Askew, and a proud father to their only son, Milton Leon Askew Jr. His greatest mission in life was to care for and support his son, "Lil-Milton," with unconditional love, honor, and dignity. His deep commitment to family was evident in every aspect of his life, leaving behind a legacy of devotion and strength.

A man of skill and determination, Milton worked at the Newport News Shipyard and Drydock Company for over a decade before transitioning into the painting trade. Under the mentorship of Dennis Lamberson at AP Perry Painting Company, he honed his craft before taking a bold step forward relocating to Maryland and founding Milton Askew and Associates Painting Company. For over 30 years, he led a successful business, blending artistry with technical precision. His expertise secured several prestigious government contracts, including a major project for the Marine Barracks in Washington, DC.

Even after retirement, Milton's passion for painting never faded. From time to time, he would emerge from retirement to showcase his talent, proving that his skill and finesse remained unparalleled.

Beyond his work, Milton found immense joy in life's simple pleasures—sharing conversations with family and friends and passionately supporting his favorite sports teams. A die-hard Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Lakers fan, he was always ready with some spirited trash talk and friendly bets, never missing an opportunity to cheer on his "BOYS."

Milton was a former member of Queen Street Baptist Church in Hampton, VA. He later joined Miracle Temple Baptist Church in Newport News, VA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carrie Bell Askew-Martin and William Edmond Calhoun; his grandparents, Walter and Mollie Askew; and his nephew, Dwanne Martin.

Milton is survived by his devoted wife, Rosemary; his loving son, Lil-Milton; and his siblings: Mollie Askew, Frezzle Martin, Maria Martin, Hubert Martin, Thomas Martin (Pauline), Felicia Totten (Albert), and Patrina Martin. He also leaves behind cherished nieces: Carrie Percell (Wyatt), Tamar Washington, Shawanda Martin, Laneeka Hill, and Serene Martin; nephews: Linwood Martin (LeTisha), Carl Martin (Claudia), Avery Martin (Shadae), Hoziah Martin, Lashay Hill, and Dekiah Martin; his dear sister-in-law, Kathy Moore; and his best friend, Dennis Lamberson. A host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends will deeply miss him.

The viewing will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home; 3009 Chestnut Ave, Newport News, VA 23607.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 1:00 p.m., Thursday, March 13, 2025, at Miracle Temple Baptist Church, 617 32nd Street, Newport News, VA. Viewing will be from 12 p.m. until the hour of the service at the church on Thursday. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
