Minnie Maude Johnson was born Minnie M. Long to Dave Long and Lillie Bell Hughes on August 6, 1940 in Aliceville, Alabama where she lived until she was eight years old.  She then moved in with her uncle Thomas and Aunt Elizabeth Kirkland in Birmingham, Alabama.  Minnie attended local Birmingham Public Schools and graduated from Parker High School, Class of 1961.

She met and later married Charles E. Johnson on June 9, 1960, who was later killed in Vietnam in 1970.  They were members of Antioch Baptist Church in Alabama.  The couple had one son, Charles E. Johnson, Jr. in 1961.  The family moved to Newport News and later to Hampton, Virginia.

Minnie attended various churches including New Grafton Baptist church.  She was an active participating tribal member of the Simeon/Naphtali and served on the Hospitality Committee at Providence Baptist Church where Dr. Corey Brown serves as pastor.

Minnie loved to shop especially at thrift stores.  She was known for her cornbread and collard greens.  She will truly be missed.

She leaves behind her son, Lt. Col. (RET) Charles E. Johnson, Jr., his wife, Franchesca A. Johnson and their sons, Thomas D. Anderson (fiancee Dacia Hobson) and Charles F. Johnson III "Tre," who affectionately called her "Madea" and all reside in Ellenwood, GA; She also leaves her cousins, Betty Elliot and her children Bill, Thomas, Juan and Bebe (deceased), Annie Seal Williams, Laura Pearl Williams, Carleen Haynes and Gloria Ratliff of Alabama; her nieces, Dorothy Guinn, Donna Rosario, and Ann Long from Michigan; the Beverly family, which includes Judy and Bruce Harrell, William (Joyce), Eugene (Connie), Rodney (Josette), Beverly and their children.  Minnie leaves various friends, neighbors, co-workers and church members which includes Shirley and Fred Brown, Ms. Brenda Oglesby, Debrah aka "Boo" Logan, and Trini Brown. Last but not least, her "besties," Elloris Spratley, Enes Morgan and Azalea Jordan who were affectionately known as "The Golden Girls," and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, June 21, 2019 at Providence Baptist Church, Newport News.  Interment will follow in Hampton National Cemetery.  Viewing will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and two hours prior to the service at the church on Friday.  O.
