Oletha Delcenia Suber Moore transitioned to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 23, 2024. "Del", as she was affectionately known, was born in Newport News, Virginia on September 5, 1941. Del was the baby of the family, cherished by her brothers Saul, Robert Brevard (Dianne), James "Jimmy" Thomas (Patricia), Horace (Bobbie)  and sister, Marie Gaines. She was preceded in death by her parents (Mildred and Thomas), brothers and sister and her beloved husband, Lonnie Moore.

Delcenia graduated at the age of 15 from G. W. Carver High School in 1959. There, she enjoyed reading, friendship and playing the violin. After graduating from high school, Del went on to attend The Hampton Institute in Hampton, Virginia, graduating in 1963, where she majored in speech language pathology. She graduated cum laude from Hampton Institute and became a speech therapist. In 1976, Del obtained her Master of Education in Special Education from The Virginia State College and was employed by Hampton City Schools. She was an esteemed educator and champion of children holding the position of Instructional Leader of Special Education for well over 40 years, finally retiring in 2007.

In 1970, Delcenia joined a Zealous group of phenomenal women in the Alpha Beta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. She was a dedicated member, holding several positions, including, but not limited to 1st Anti Basileus, Grad advisor, and coordinator of the Miss Blue Revue Debutante Ball. Del was also an active member of Jack and Jill. Later in life, Del joined the women of the Red Hat Society. She thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship and bonds she nurtured with these women.

Growing up, Delcenia attended church regularly as a member of Abyssinia Baptist Church where she actively participated in many of its auxiliaries, including as a member of the senior choir, the willing workers and the church board. Later, Del became a member of New Beech Grove Baptist Church in Newport News. She served faithfully until her health declined. She was a humble, virtuous and faithful servant who was loved and respected by the community. She continued to support the church by streaming services each and every Sunday morning on her iPad. Never straying from her love of Christ, Delcenia attended the BSF Bible Study group faithfully every Tuesday morning for the past seven years. She enjoyed learning about the Lord and strengthening her devotion to Him.

Del's family and friends were very important to her and she spent her lifetime sharing with and caring for them. She had an infectious laugh and was a friend to everyone. She had a passion for mentoring young women, from her nieces, to her Sorority Sisters, to her students, to her friends and beyond.

From her place in eternity, Del will continue to watch, guide and protect those she loves: her daughter Kelly Daniel Johnson; her grandson Jordan Johnson (Kayla); her great granddaughter Yulianna; her many nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, November 8, 2024 at Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Temple.  Interment will follow in Hampton National Cemetery.  Viewing will be from 3-6 p.m., Thursday, November 7, 2024 at the funeral home.  O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
