Ophelia Jeanette Barrett-Peartree, a beloved member of the Newport News Virginia community, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2024, at the age of 76.

Ophelia was born on October 20, 1947 in Newport News, Virginia to her loving parents, the late Dorothy Watkins-Barrett and Earnest Herbert Sr.  She attended school in Newport News, Virginia. In 1962, Ophelia moved to Washington, DC, where she lived for several years before returning to Newport News in 1975 to be with her family.  With a God-fearing mother, Ophelia came to know the Lord and grew closer to Him throughout her life making her affiliation with St. James Deliverance Church.  She was a faithful member fellowshipping regularly until she became ill.  Despite Ophelia's health challenges, her dedication remained unwavering, evidenced by her continued participation in the church's prayer line and her touching presence on Mother's Day of 2024.

Throughout her life, Ophelia was known for unwavering dedication to her family, friends and community.  Her warmth, generosity and infectious spirit touched the lives of many.  She had a remarkable ability to make everyone she met feel special and valued.  She was a cherished daughter, devoted friend, and a pillar of strength and kindness to all who knew her.

Ophelia's passions included her love for church, cooking, taking photos of her family and caring for those she loved.  She leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion and her memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Survived by her children: Minister Norman Barrett Carl Barrett, Carl Barrett, Priscilla Douglas-Cypress (Freddie Cypress), James Douglas (Patricia Freeman-Douglas) and Shenida Barrett-Crippen; Ophelia's memory is also embraced by her siblings: Joyce Barrett, George "Theodus" Barrett, Wesley Barrett, and Michele Barrett-Hopson (Michael Hopson).  She leaves behind her cherished friend and sister of 63 years, Ann Crump-Robinson, as well as her special nieces: Andrea Barrett, Stephanie Bumphus, Cheryl Barrett, and Rachel Holmes.  Additionally she is survived by 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Ophelia was preceded in death by her parents Dorothy Watkins-Barrett and Earnest Herbert Sr.; her grandmother, Annie Watkins; and her siblings: Shirley Aydlett, Earnest Barrett Jr., Barbara Knight, Peggy Bumphus, Donald Barrett, William Barrett and Patricia Barrett.  Her family and friends will miss her dearly and will continue to honor her life and legacy.

Rest in peace, Ophelia Jeanette Barrett-Peartree.  Your light will continue to shine in the hearts of those who loved you.

Funeral service will be held at 11AM, Saturday, June 8, 2024 at Galilee Baptist Church, 6012 Jefferson Avenue, Newport News, VA 23605.  Viewing will be from 3-6PM on Friday, June 7, 2024 at the funeral home and two hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.  Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.  O.
