Obituary

Oscar Leon Barber, known to many as Leon, departed this life on August 19, 2023, in the Veterans Hospital in Hampton, VA surrounded by his loving family. He was a lifelong resident of Hampton, VA. Leon attended Phenix High School and later joined the U.S. Army and served 3 years with an honorable discharge. After his service in the Army, he worked at Langley Air Force Base as a civil service employee where he was employed as a chef. In addition to working at Langley Air Force Base, he also worked many years for Hampton City Schools, Newport News City Schools, and New Horizons as a custodian. After twenty years of service, he retired from Langley and after 15 years of service he retired from the school system.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Doris Ann Barber; parents, Benjamin and Alice Barber; brothers, Alfred Barber and Lawrence Barber; sisters,  Kathaleen B. Banks and Mildred Jordan; and grandson, Reginald Jenkins, Jr.

Leon Barber is survived by three children, Angela Barnes (Devon), Barbara Jenkins, Lawrence Kirk (Regina); grandchild, Chantrell Jenkins; great grandchildren, Kyrell, Kyle, Nasir, and Noah; brothers, Nelson Barber and Ernest Barber; sisters, Lucile Winder and Julia Williams (Marvin); Special Niece, Cheryl Winder; and a host of Nieces and Nephews.

A viewing will be held on Monday August 28, 2023, from 3 to 6 pm at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home.  A home going service will begin at 11 am on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 171 Semple Farm Rd, Hampton, VA. Interment will follow at 2 pm at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk, VA.  O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
