Pearly Travis Haskins, 99, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home on Friday, October 21, 2016. She was born in Accomack County, Virginia on September 7, 1917 to the late Charlie A. Wise and Willie Anne Kellam Wise.
Pearly attended elementary and high school in Accomack County, VA. She received her nursing degree from St. Phillips School of Nursing in Richmond, VA.
Her career began at Whittaker Memorial Hospital where she worked for several years followed by working as the Head Registered Nurse at VA State School for the Deaf and Blind. After retirement, Pearly worked for a brief time with Dr. C. Waldo Scott and Dr. William Franklin. She also found time to join a bowling league, a pinochle and bridge club, and just enjoyed life.
Pearly was originally a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Newport News, VA. She later became an active member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and served as head usher for several years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Henry R. Haskins; and her brother, Harold R. Wise from Yeadon, PA.
She leaves to cherish her memories her only daughter, Edwadine Travis Whitehead (Harry); grandsons, Jamal Fashad Whitehead (Bridgett) and Aaron Rashad Whitehead; great grandsons, Jamison Fenwick Whitehead and Branson Vaughn Whitehead; her nephews, Harold Robert Wise, Jr. ("Dee") and Kenneth Charles Wise (Angela); her niece, Ellene Wise Southerland (James); other relatives and friends. Pearly also leaves her very special caregivers, Joyce Barrett, Jordanna Latham (Kim), and Bea Holmes.
A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m., Thursday, October 27, 2016 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Newport News. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be held from 1-6 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home and two hours prior to the service at the church on Thursday. O.H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
