Celebration of Life

Ralph Waldo Ball was born October 31, 1941, to the late Emerson Ball and Clevie Ball. He graduated from Church Street High School in Thomasville, North Carolina in 1959. In March 1963, Ralph joined the Navy. He was the first African American to be selected, trained, and promoted to Helmsman aboard the first nuclear power aircraft carrier, The U.S.S. Enterprise. He received a special award during his tenure as Helmsman aboard his second ship, the U.S.S. Oriskayy for his ability to steer an attack carrier on a steady course. As a Vietnam Veteran, he served "In Country" in South Vietnam.

Ralph later returned to Newport News and married the love of his life, Brenda Ball on June 1, 1968. He later became employed by the Newport News Shipyard, working in the painters' department. Soon after that, he transferred to the security department. During this time he earned an associate degree in Criminal Justice.

Ralph was an Elder at Dominion Ministries International under the leadership of Apostle Sammie Black and Dr. Kim Black. Elder Ball was a remarkable leader with unwavering commitment and compassion who touched the lives of many. His deep love for youth was evident in all his actions. Elder Ball's heart for community was demonstrated through many years of food distribution by means of the Virginia Peninusla Foodbank. He will be forever cherished by the people of Dominion as he leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness and service.

Ralph, 84, passed away April 30, after a brief illness. He is the son of the late Emerson Ball and Clevie Ball. He is survived by his sister, Gloria Battle. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 55 years, Brenda Ball; a son Brandon Ball and two daughters: Regina Barfield (Carlton) and Teresa Campbell. He also leaves behind a hosts of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends who will hold him as a testimony of God's Grace and Mercy in their hearts.

Funeral service will be held at 12 p.m., Wednesday, May 7, 2025 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 171 Semple Farm Road, Hampton, VA.  Viewing will be from 3-6 p.m., Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home.  Interment will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 20, 2025 at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, VA.  O. H.
