Obituary for Ralph Boyd Ransom Sr.

Ralph Boyd Ransom Sr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and dedicated educator, transitioned peacefully at the age of 78 on December 10, 2024 at home. His departure leaves a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, and countless students he touched over his long and impactful life.

Early Life and Family

Ralph was born on November 1, 1946, in Garysburg, North Carolina to Lester E. Ransom Sr. and Malinda Davis Ransom. He was the cherished brother of Collin Ransom (Mary Alice) and was preceded in death by his siblings: Blannie L. Ransom Underdue, Lester Ransom Jr., Elizabeth K. Alston, Leroy Ransom, Winnie B. Ransom, Ernest L. Ransom, Raymond Ransom, Bertha M. Ransom, Barbara A. Williams, Jeanette Ransom Alston, Dozine M. Moses, and Patricia A. Ransom.

Ralph's love for his family was evident in his marriage of 57 years to Janet McClain Ransom. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising two children, Shari D. Wallace (Stanley) and Ralph B. Ransom Jr. (Sherrina). Ralph was a proud grandfather to Tiffany M. Riddick (Lamar), Mark A. Nesby (MyKeisha), Mitchell J. Ransom, J'son M. Ransom (Chloe), and Marcell J. Ransom (Sage), as well as a beloved great-grandfather to four great-grandchildren.  Also survived by a host of  nieces, nephews, sister and brother in-laws, cousins and loving friends.

Professional Life and Education

Ralph was a dedicated educator for over 30 years, deeply committed to shaping the lives of his students. He began his academic journey at Gumberry High School in Gumberry, North Carolina, where he graduated at the top of his class. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), followed by a Master of Science in Mathematics from Hampton Institute (now Hampton University). His love for teaching was evident as he went on to teach at Hampton High School, Buckroe Junior High School, and Phoebus High School. Even after retiring, Ralph returned to the classroom, teaching at Bethel High School and Hampton High School.

Beyond the classroom, Ralph was passionate about extracurricular activities, serving as a tennis coach, mentor, and tutorial specialist for both adults and children. He also worked as the Superintendent for the Night School at Zion Baptist Church and a Substance Abuse Counselor/Group Leader at Capo Detox for ten years.

Service and Legacy

Ralph's commitment to service extended beyond the classroom. He was a proud lifetime member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. And a dedicated member of the Peninsula General Alumni Association of ECSU. Ralph's leadership and dedication were further demonstrated in his role as the president and part owner of the Our World Club, Inc. and member of Romeo (Retired Old Men Eating Out).

Accomplishments/Awards

Ralph's many accomplishments were recognized with numerous awards, including the 25, 40 & 50 Service Award from Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., the Life Member Award from the General Alumni Association of ECSU, and a Twenty-Five Year Service Award from Hampton City Schools. He was also honored with the Kiwanis Future Leader Award.

Special Friends

Ralph was preceded in death by several dear friends, including Herman Horn, Dave Grant, Ernest Everette, and Charles Kirby. Their friendship, like so many others Ralph cultivated throughout his life, was a testament to his caring nature and loyalty.

Ralph's legacy is one of love, service, and education. He touched the lives of everyone he met, and his impact will continue to be felt by those who had the privilege of knowing him. His love for his family, his students, and his community will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.

The Celebration

The Celebration of LIfe Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 19, 2024 at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home.  Viewing will be from 3-6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 18, 2024 and two hours prior to the service on Thursday.  O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family
