Our beloved Reta Hanks was called home Wednesday, March 13 after a lengthy illness, surrounded by family.  She was very much loved and will be missed by family and some very special friends.

Reta was born to the late Walter and Ida Mae Hanks on September 4, 1949, in Newport News, VA. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Jerry Hanks, and her granddaughter Adriona Hanks.

As the only girl and the baby of the family, Reta spent her childhood here in Newport News. She attended local schools for her education, including Huntington High School, and she also attended Pine Forge Academy in Pottstown, PA for a brief period.  Following her educational years, Reta was employed at Boulevard Cleaners (previously Albanos) for over 15 years.

As a young Mom, Reta loved her children, her family and family gatherings.  She was often found in the kitchen preparing meals for all to enjoy and her specialty was stuffed cabbage.

As time and age marched on, health issues plagued Reta and much of what she enjoyed changed drastically.  She settled into watching game shows, eating chocolates, cashews, and Jelly Belly brand Tropical flavored jelly bellies to her delight; and embracing her beloved family and a few friends with a huge smile and much joy.

Reta leaves to cherish her memories her daughters, Tianna Hanks Hartsfield and Tamisha Hanks; her grandchildren, Allena and Isaiah Hanks, and Janeta Hartsfield; brother, Walter Hanks (Julian); sister in law, Viola Hanks; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and few very close friends.

Viewing will be from 12-3 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at the funeral home.  Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 24, 2024 at Calvary Seventh Day Adventist Church, 1200 17th Street, Newport News, VA  23607.  O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
