Ross M. Hines, 86, born August 8, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan was called by his Heavenly Father on August 4, 2020.  Ross was preceded in death by his parents, Ross Lee and Ruth M. Hines; grandparents, Lela and Mattoon Attles; sisters, Henrietta Clemmons and Elaine Rice; and brother, Wilbur Hines.  He graduated from Mary Potter Albion Academy in Oxford, NC. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Science Degree from North Carolina Central University and his Master of Arts from Michigan State University.

Mr. Hines was employed by the Newport News, VA Public School System, moving from teacher, coach, principal to his retirement as Assistant Superintendent. He was an active member of The First United Baptist Church, Gloucester, VA, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, founding member of Virginia Peninsula Chapter of 100 Black Men of America, Incorporated, and former Chairman of the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors.

He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved and devoted wife of 65 years, Clara M. Hines; youngest brother, Thomas Hines, Sr.; four children, Stephen Hines (Verletta), Shevawn Thompson, Zachary  Hines (Katrina), Rosilyn Taylor (Garry); nine grandchildren, Sharonza Penson, Stephen Hines II (Ruquiyah), Vivia Wilkerson, Bryan Thompson, Zachary Hines II, Imani Hines, Symone Hines, Alexandra Hines and Justin Taylor; ten great grandchildren; with a host of nieces, nephews, friends and relatives.

Due to Covid-19 the Family will have a Private Service at this time.  At a later date a Public Memorial/Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends to honor Ross M. Hines.

In lieu of flowers, we will further Ross' passion for education by donating to the VA Peninsula Chapter of the 100 Black Men - Ross M. Hines Memorial Scholarship Fund. Donations can be made via www.100blackmenva.org or checks payable to 100 Black Men mail to P.O. Box 2400, Newport News, VA  23609.
