Ruby Jean Tumlin entered into eternal rest on Friday, April 20, 2018 at Northampton Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center after a short illness.
Ruby was born in Cameron, NC on February 6, 1938, but grew up in Newport News, VA. She attended Huntington High School in Newport News, VA and obtained her Bachelor's in Nursing from NC A&T in Greensboro, NC. She obtained her Master's in Guidance & Counseling from Hampton Institute in Hampton, VA. She had a 30 year career in Nursing to include serving as a Nursing Instructor with Norfolk State College, Riverside Hospital School of Professional Nursing and New Horizons Technical Center.
Ruby was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Bernard Tumlin and her mother, Oglatha Pratt. She was a members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Dochiki Wives Auxiliary, Inc. and Greater Walters AME Zion Church in Newport News, VA. She had a passion for traveling, loved animals and enjoyed spending time with friends and family.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, April 27, 2018 at Greater Walters AME Zion Church, 656-28th Street, Newport News, VA 23607 with Rev. Dr. Kenneth W. Arrington, Senior Pastor officiating. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Viewing will begin at 1 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home followed by a wake service 6 p.m. Mrs. Tumlin will lie in state from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service at the church on Friday. O. H.
