Shirley Dudley went home to be with his Heavenly Father on March 12, 2022. He was born in Newport News, Virginia and attended primary and secondary schools in the east end section of Newport News. "Crack," as he was so fondly called by family and friends, was a graduate of Huntington High School Class of 1956. He was so proud to be a Mighty Viking. After high school he attended Virginia State College, Norfolk Division.
"Crack" was an avid softball player. He played in softball leagues in the late 80's and early 90's and could talk for hours about his experiences on the baseball field. He worked for over fifty years at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, now Huntington Ingalls.
He loved First Baptist Church East End where he was a member for twenty plus years. He was very proud of being a Trustee, Usher, and Greeter. A few months ago, the title of Trustee Emeritus was bestowed upon him. He was so excited and thankful. He loved the community and gave back whenever he had the opportunity. In recent years, he enjoyed hanging out with friends at Hardee's talking about old times.
"Crack" was a family man. He was previously married to Gloria K. Smith for eleven years. They remained the best of friends. From that union one daughter was born, Kelly. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. It gave him great pleasure to see his grandson compete on local sports teams.
He is preceded in death by his grandson, Brandon Dudley; sister Marilyn Murphy and brother Bobby Dudley. He is survived by daughter, Kelly Dudley and daughter-in-law, Lovely J. Houston; his great-grandson, Levi Dudley; nephew Tony Dudley and niece Tasha Dudley. He is also survived by very dear and loyal friends, and devoted family and church members. He was a fabulous father and awesome friend!
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home. Please continue to keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
