Today we celebrate the life of Solomon Joe Weaver Jr., who passed away on January 26, 2021.

He was born April 21, 1934 to the late Solomon W. Weaver Sr. and Millie Bartell Weaver.  He was the fourth son and the fourth child of twelve children. Solomon was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Dorothy Lee Weaver; four brothers, Wilbert Weaver, George Weaver, Thelbert Weaver and Melvin Weaver Sr.; and two sisters, Cynthia Weaver and Mae Sanford.

Solomon, affectionately known as "Uncle Joe", had a kind heart, a giving spirit, and would help anyone who was in need, will be deeply missed.  On a nice day you would see "Uncle Joe" sitting on his front porch waving to people he knew as they were driving by.

Solomon was raised on a farm in Florence County, South Carolina. He attended Florence County Public School, under the Eldership of the late Rev. Alexandria Giles.  He was a faithful junior member, who served on the choir, Usher board, and Trustee Board.  In 1953, he joined the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict.  In 1956, he relocated to Newport News, VA and by 1960, he was employed and served with the military for over 35 years.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Harry S. Foster Post 67 Department of Virginia. During his membership, he served as Post Service Officer, Post Assistant Chaplin, and Post Sargent-at-Arms.

In 1982, Solomon joined Ivy Baptist Church and was baptized under the leadership of Pastor Henry W. Maxwell. He joined the Senior Usher Board, where he served for more than 20 years.  In February 2009, Solomon was ordained as Deacon and served on the Deacon Board, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Kevin G. Swann.  He loved his church family, his pastors, and he loved the Lord.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories: his stepson, Lonnie G. Bazemore; granddaughter, Dana McKnight (Eric McKnight); one special niece, Linda W. Williams (Levi Williams); Two brothers, Alexander Weaver of VA; Robert Weaver (Betty) of SC; three sisters, Flossie Berry of NY, Lydia Barnes (Moses) of NC, Birdie Parker of MI, and a sisters-in-Law, Lizzie Weaver of VA and Sadie Weaver of SC; A Special friend, Sylvia Boston; and a host of great grands, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

A Viewing will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home.  Due to COVID - 19 restrictions a  funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at the funeral home with a limitation of 40 people.   Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.  O.
