In Loving Memory of Tamara Anita Garrett

Tamara Anita Garrett, affectionately known as Tammy, was born on August 22, 1962, in Charlotte, NC, to Veola and Thearry Garrett. She departed this life after a fulfilling journey on February 10, 2025.

Tammy graduated from South Mecklenburg High School in 1980, where she was honored as a Delta debutante. During her time at South Mecklenburg, she also worked at Elfreada Floral Shoppe. She continued her education at Hampton Institute (now Hampton University), where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics in 1984.

Her professional career spanned forty years as an engineer at Newport News Shipbuilding (HII), where she made significant contributions. Tammy was recently inducted into the Master Shipbuilder Class of 2024 an esteemed recognition in her field.

Tammy was a former member of Queen Street Baptist Church in Hampton, VA.  She later joined Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church in Newport News, VA, where she was a dedicated member and began serving on various boards and committees in 1995, showcasing her commitment to her faith and community.

Tammy is survived by her mother, Veola Garrett, and four siblings: Tim Garrett, Taiwanna Garrett-Sullivan (Shonta), and Eric Hill, all of Charlotte, NC; and Michael Harris of Kernersville, NC. She is also survived by her beloved nephews and nieces: Tj, Tayj, Logan, Nadiyah, Elijah, Aniya, and Jasmine; and one great niece, Nora Mixson; as well as aunts, uncles, and a host of cousins.

Tammy will be remembered for her strong work ethic, devotion to her family, and her service to her community. She leaves a lasting legacy of love and dedication.

Funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Friday, February 21, 2025 at Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church, 830 25th Street, Newport News, VA 23607. Viewing will be from 11 a.m. until the hour of the service at the church on Friday.  O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve Tammy's family.
