HAMPTON – Theodore L. Fitzgerald, Jr., devoted husband, loving father, caring brother and loyal friend was called to his heavenly home for eternal rest on Tuesday, September 4, 2018. He was born in Richmond, VA to Theodore and Lillian Fitzgerald on July 1, 1939. At an early age, he moved to Newport News, VA. He accepted Christ at the age of 9, and joined Wesley Grove United Church of Christ, where he remained a lifelong member.
Affectionately known as "Teddy," he was a proud graduate of Huntington High School in Newport News, VA. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Norfolk State University, and a Master of Arts degree from Hampton University. He was an educator, driver's education instructor, and coach with Newport News Public Schools, and then became the Director of the Peninsula Alcohol Safety Action Program, where he retired after 26 years of service in 2002.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Andrea "Baba" Fitzgerald; his sister, Dorothy F. Watkins; and brother, Wilbert Fitzgerald.
He is survived by those left to cherish his memory: his loving wife of 57 years, Maurice Greene Fitzgerald; his daughters, Angela Fitzgerald and Bonita F. Ward, son-in-law, Maurice Ward; nine grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; his brothers: David Fitzgerald, Julian Fitzgerald (Jean), and Charles Fitzgerald; his sister, Jean F. Smith (Graham); sisters-in-law, Linda Fitzgerald, and Linda Butler (Glenn); brother-in-law, William Watkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A funeral service will be held 12:00 pm, Monday, September 10, 2018 at Wesley Grove United Church of Christ. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home and two hours prior to the service at the church on Monday. O.H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
