God in his infinite wisdom called Tommy R. Overton, Sr. home on April 23, 2025, at the age of 94. He was born on June 13, 1930, to Surena D. Overton. He was born in Detroit, Michigan and raised in Ahoskie, NC, Bronx, NY and then Newport News, VA. Tommy was preceded in death by his wives, Aurelia S. Overton and Audrey R. White, two sons, Tommy R. Overton, Jr., Norman T. Overton, and son-in-law, Curtis L. Jennings.
Tommy attended school in Newport News, VA. He graduated from Huntington High School.
Tommy served in the United States Army and was employed at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. He also worked and retired from the U. S. Civil Service after 30 years. He attended St. Augustine Episcopal Church, Newport News, Virginia where he served as Sexton, President of the Men's Club, and Senior Warden. He was honored as "A Living Stone" from St. Augustine Episcopal Church for his ongoing commitment and dedication as an elder member of the congregation. He received the City of Newport News' Lifelong Citizenship Award and an award from the Peninsula Agency on Aging for fifteen years of service. Tommy was given the title of Emeritus Funeral Service Attendant after assisting at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home for over 15 years. Even after retirement, he was a frequent visitor at the funeral home, always stopping by to make sure that his OHS Family was doing well.
Tommy was an avid Hampton Jazz Festival attendee and faithfully attended over 50 Jazz Festivals until his health declined. He donated 136 pints of blood to the American Red Cross.
Tommy leaves to cherish his memories one son, Cecil R. Overton; three daughters, Scerene M. Giles (Mark), Audrey C. Overton, and Faynetta O. Jennings; daughter-in-law, Phyllis A. Overton; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 3009 Chestnut Avenue, Newport News, VA. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. The viewing will be held from 3-6 p.m. on Monday, May 5, 2025, at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home. O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
