Velma Scaife Foster passed away Sunday, February 12, 2017. She was born March 13, 1956 in Turner, Arkansas, the daughter of Doris and Lee Scaife.
Velma graduated from Pembroke High School in Hampton, VA. In 1978 she earned her BS Degree in Mass Communications from Virginia Commonwealth University., Richmond, VA. After graduation, Velma started working at WCMS radio in Norfolk, VA. as a broadcaster. Velma was a news reporter at WNIS talk radio. In 1981, Velma married Charles (Chuck) Foster and moved to Bristol, TN. She started her television broadcast career in Johnson City, TN as the weather person at WJHL. Less than a year later, she was hired by the competition (WCYB) as an anchor. Thus beginning her long and successful career in television journalism. In 1986, Velma returned to Hampton Roads where she worked at WVEC Channel 13 News for 31 years, becoming the Voice of the Peninsula before retiring in 2016.
She is survived by her daughter, Lauren (Jesse) Henby and a cherished grandson, Foster Henby of Bel Air, MD; her mother, Doris Scaife of Hampton, VA; three brothers, Markis and Glennis (Ciera) of Hampton, VA and James (Karen) of Powhatan, VA; and a beloved grandmother, Fymerlee Cannon of Austin, TX.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Monday, February 20, 2017 at Bethel Church, 1705 Todds Lane, Hampton. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, February 19, 2017 at the funeral home and two hours prior to the service at the church on Monday. O.H.
