Virgil D. Gillis Sr., affectionately known as "Boogie", transitioned peacefully on June 1, 2025, at the age of 81 surrounded by the love of his family. He was born to the late Herman and Edith Gillis and was the third of seven sons in a close-knit family.

Virgil was a proud U.S. Air Force veteran, serving his country for 20 years. Airman Gillis' assignments included many tours to include the 11th Tactical Fighter Wing at Udorn RTAFB, Thailand and the 1st Fighter Wing at Langley AFB Virginia, where he supported F-4 and F-15 fighter aircraft. After retirement, he worked in Saudi Arabia for 14 years as a civil-military liaison and later served as Director of Transportation for Chesapeake Public Schools for 12 years.

Virgil was a faithful member of Queen Street Baptist and in 2005, he was ordained as a deacon.

Virgil is survived by his son, Virgil D. Gillis, Jr. (Tanya), daughter, Selena Gillis, granddaughters, Ciara Gillis and Jordan Gillis, brother, Glen Gillis (Laverne), and a host of nieces and nephews.

Known for his love of fashion and music, "Boogie" will be remembered for his dedication to family, faith, and community. His memory will continue to shine in the hearts of those he loved and inspired.

Smith & Son Funeral Home, 3009 Chestnut Avenue Newport News, VA 23607 on June 25 from 3 p.m-6 p.m. His Celebration of Life will take place at Queen Street Baptist Church, 98 North Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA 23669 on June 26 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road Suffolk, Virginia 23434 at 1 p.m.   O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
