It is with an all encompassing wave of grief that we tip our hat for the final time to our most cherished father, grandfather, and great-grandfather - Zeb Sumner.

Zeb, the only son of his devoted mother, the late Carrie Justice Sumner and stepfather, the late James Robert Sumner, was born on May 24, 1930, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. On Monday, March 10, 2025, Zeb ascended to his Heavenly home.

Upon completing his studies at Booker T. Washington High School, Zeb would soon start a family. He united in marriage to the late Ruth Debnam Sumner. To this union, Illawennette and Wilhelmenia were born.

The family established roots in Newport News, Virginia. Zeb would go on to have a life changing career with Newport News Shipbuilding, contributing 43 years of service and retiring as a Master Welder.

Never one to let any grass grow under his feet, Zeb began driving the bus for Hampton City Schools. He had a great affinity for the special population of children he served.

Ever the showman, Zeb was booked and busy on the 1s and 2s - deejaying the latest hits across Hampton Roads. He was our Mr. Wonderful.

Zeb was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather; spouse, Ruth Debnam Sumner; and son-in-law, John Hill, I.

Zeb is survived by his daughters: Illawennette Hill and Wilhelmenia Sumner; grandchildren: Tracie Sumner, John Hill, II., and Jennifer Hill; and great-grandchildren: Naeem Freeman and Jaylynn Hill.  Also mourning Zeb's loss are his steadfast best friend, Mr. Elmer Brown; treasured cousins, and a host of caring nieces, nephews, and friends.

There will be a viewing of Mr. Sumner from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2025 at O. H. Smith & Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens.
